Megan came over that Sunday and I introduced her to Dadi and Montu. I was surprised that Megan was kind of shy with them. But she didn’t seem shocked when Dadi gave her a hug. I think it was because I had told her to expect it.

“You’re so lucky to have your grandma and cousin visit you for such a long time,” she said.

“Last week, Montu and Kavita went outside to play every day after we got home from school. That’s when I had to do my homework, so I didn’t get a chance to join them. He was still jet-lagged, so he went to bed early. I didn’t spend much time with him. But I have with Dadi. On Friday we cooked dessert.”

“Really?” She seemed surprised. “Doesn’t Kavita want to learn cooking too?”

I shook my head. “Ever since Kavita and Montu got into the back seat of the van on the way home from the airport, they have been best friends. It kind of bothers me. Montu is younger than me but older than Kavita. Smack in the middle. Shouldn’t he be my friend too?”

“Hmmm …” Megan looked out the window.

“It’s not fair that they have a bond.”

“You have a bond with Dadi.” She pointed outside. “Looks like they have a very sticky bond.”

Montu and Kavita were at the picnic table. Whatever they were eating must have been sticky, because they were licking their fingers. Now I understood what Megan meant.

“I guess you just have to find something special to do with Montu,” she said. “An activity or a project that he really wants to do.”

I thought about how I could entice Montu.
